AGNES – A Fiery feast

It’s the spot that everyone’s been buzzing about since it opened back in late 2020, and for good reason. What’s the magic ingredient? Fire. Quite literally. At Agnes, everything is cooked over an open flame, from the irresistible scarlet prawn doughnuts to the melt-in-your-mouth smoked lamb neck that’s worth the hype. And the atmosphere? Think moody and industrial chic. But the real gem is the rooftop terrace, where you can indulge in dessert and sip a cocktail while soaking in stunning city views.

Helmed by the talented Chef Dan Arnold, who brings a Michelin-star pedigree and a wealth of culinary accolades, this venue offers a dining experience that stands out. Forget about the traditional à la carte menu; here, the focus is on entrusting the kitchen with three, five, or carte blanche courses. Take our advice and go for the carte blanche—it’s like handing the chef a blank canvas, where your taste buds become the masterpiece across seven to eight sensational courses.

Situated on a serene 1.9-acre plot in Doonan, Sunshine Coast, this contemporary gem by Sarah Waller Architecture was designed as Sarah Waller’s family home—a luxurious retreat reflecting innovative and bespoke home design.

The property transcends being merely a house, emerging as a sanctuary where meticulous attention to detail ensures an unrivalled living experience. Sarah envisioned Blackwood as a resort-like haven intertwined with its natural surroundings to foster tranquillity and relaxation. The design philosophy aims to create a luxurious and inviting space with elegantly blurred boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. The bold design features a striking mix of materials, contrasting solid off-form concrete walls with warm black timber cladding. This dynamic interplay of textures is enhanced by lush plantings and thoughtfully crafted landscaping, achieving a seamless integration of nature and modern architecture.

The home adopts a unique pavilion-style layout with distinct structures for  living, sleeping, and office spaces, unified by a prominent off-form concrete “blade feature wall.” Expansive glass windows flood the interiors with natural light, fostering a strong connection with the outdoors. This layout ensures that each space within the home has its own character while maintaining a cohesive overall design.

At the heart of Blackwood is its magnificent 21-metre pool, centrally located and visible from all living spaces. Moving away from traditional rectangular pools, Sarah chose a sculptural shape that mirrors the sharp lines of the home’s architecture, creating a striking focal point.

The interior design of Blackwood features a refined monochromatic palette, combining stark white with matte black accents (a Sarah Waller signature). This minimalist approach is enriched with natural timber elements and carefully selected lighting fixtures, adding warmth and depth. Each design choice, from concrete walls to black timber cladding, contributes to a visually striking environment exuding sophistication.

Blackwood includes five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a powder room, and a five-car garage, all designed with sustainability in mind. The careful selection of materials, integration of renewable energy sources, and water-conscious strategies all highlight Sarah Waller Architecture’s commitment to environmentally conscious design. For example, features like off-form concrete for thermal mass enhance energy efficiency, helping to keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter, while the purposefully designed large roof overhang minimises the sun’s impact in tropical climates.

Blackwood exemplifies the pinnacle of modern architecture while honouring the natural beauty of its surroundings, inviting those who dwell here to not just live but to thrive.

Brisbane, it’s time to grab life (and your champagne glasses) by the bubbles! If you haven’t yet experienced the jaw-dropping brilliance of Blanc de Blanc Encore at The West End Electric, what have you been doing?! This glitter-soaked, cheeky-as-hell extravaganza is everything you never knew you needed in a night out. But hurry, this world-class show won’t be sticking around forever!

Brought to life by the creative masterminds at Strut & Fret, Blanc de Blanc Encore is a sparkling, champagne-fuelled rollercoaster of circus, cabaret, comedy, and unadulterated fun—all set against the glitzy, decadent vibes of Brisbane’s newest hotspot. Strut & Fret have taken their dazzling productions to 25 countries, from Brussels to Bogota and beyond, but Blanc de Blanc Encore might just be their best yet.

Prepare to dive headfirst into a world where aerialists defy gravity, hula hoops defy physics, and you’re left clutching your pearls (or your drink) one minute and crying with laughter the next. This is no ordinary night out—it’s a champagne-soaked party where the bubbles flow as freely as the laughs.

Scott Maidment, the creative genius behind it all, has already taken Blanc de Blanc to London’s West End and the Las Vegas Strip, where it racked up rave reviews and sell-out crowds. Now, with Encore, he’s amped up the glitz, the glamour, and the glorious mayhem. The champagne-themed show just received four season extensions at The Grand Electric Sydney and sold out the Sydney Opera House.

And then there’s the cast—a lineup so good, you might just want to give them a standing ovation before the curtain even rises:

  • Felix Pouliot, a Canadian comedian and acrobat, will have you in stitches one moment and gasping in awe the next.
  • American aerialist Caitlin Tomson-Moylan and her partner Spencer Craig deliver a duo hoop act that is so stunning, it’s practically criminal.
  • Perth’s own Jackie Chambers and hula-hooping superstar Jess Mews bring pure, unstoppable energy.
  • The soulful pipes of South African vocalist Sasha Lee Saunders will leave you swooning.
  • Ukrainian dance dynamo Misha serves jaw-dropping hip-hop and bone-breaking moves.
  • And Berlin’s acrobatic comedian Remi Martin, who’s performed for actual royalty, proves why he’s circus royalty himself.

Show Details:

Venue: The West End Electric, 125 Boundary St, West End, QLD 4101
Dates: Previews from 14 November, with opening night on 21 November
Showtimes:

  • Wednesdays & Thursdays: 7:30 pm

The transformation of this classic Queenslander home in Brisbane combines architectural ingenuity with everlasting grace.

In the heart of Brisbane, where Queenslander homes reign supreme with their timeless charm and iconic features, stood a dwelling yearning for a modern twist. This is the story of its rebirth, guided by the visionary team from Bones Studio.

The challenge was clear: how to transcend the confines of traditional Queenslander design and forge a deeper connection between indoor comfort and the property’s lush outdoor expanse? The solution was nothing short of genius: elevate and reposition the dwelling, adding an additional level on the ground floor and sculpting a split-level design that danced with the natural contours of the land. Thus, the old facade gracefully embraced contemporary elegance, crowned by a breathtaking double-height space at the rear.

For the homeowners, the dream was profound: a home that embraced both intimate family moments and lively social gatherings. Bones Studio took up the challenge with fervour, meticulously partitioning the space to create distinct realms of comfort and serenity.

Bedrooms and utilities found solace at the front, while open-plan living areas beckon at the rear, where the backyard and pool now seamlessly intertwine with the living space.

Bones Studio embarked on a delicate dance of preservation and innovation, retaining the essence of the original dwelling while infusing it with contemporary marvels, like the slatted and perforated metal bridge that now serves as a symbol of unity on the upper level, gracefully linking the old and new.

Partnering with the skilled builders at Muller Constructions, Bones Studio breathed life into their vision, leaving no stone unturned. Interior designer Jessica White from Room by Room lent her expertise, infusing each space with an air of simple elegance and creativity.

The result is an extraordinary fusion of tradition and innovation—a home where indoor melds with outdoor, comfort intertwines with luxury, and the past dances with the present in a symphony of design.

Modern elegance blends with rustic charm at Mimosa Moon, the exquisite home of celebrated designer and stylist Megan Morton.

Located in the beautiful Northern Rivers on a large property that includes a small rainforest, creek boundary, and 360 scenic vistas, the 120-year-old homestead was built by one of the area’s original founding families. It consisted of a very large plot of farmland that was divided a long time ago and now compromises several neighbouring properties.

“When I first saw the property, I could see the potential, not only for a comfortable family home but a showcase for the varied passions both myself and my husband Giles share, as well as ample room for our equestrienne daughter, Bea’s ever-growing stable,” explains Megan.

From its modest beginnings, Mimosa Moon has flourished much like the majestic trees it is named after. Once a cosy four-room retreat with a welcoming verandah, it now stands as a testament to thoughtful evolution. While retaining the essence of the original cottage, recent renovations have revitalised its walls, creating a haven where charm and hospitality harmoniously intertwine.

“I often refer to my job as ‘house whispering’ as I like to let the building speak to me and tell me how it should be designed,” said Megan. “When we first moved here, I waited a long time to settle in before planning the changes that have eventuated in a very functional and efficient but well-utilised space. I wanted the family to come and stay, see how the existing house worked and then figure out what could be improved.”

Megan initially made minimal alterations to the kitchen and dining area, relocating utilities to the room’s perimeters to create additional space for meal preparation and entertainment while preserving access to the outdoor views. The new kitchen island, an old high cedar workbench discovered in Hobart, is ideal for food preparation and serves as a natural gathering spot for family and visitors. Adjacent to the kitchen and dining area, Megan established her ‘Kosy Korner,’ inspired by her in-laws’ cosy dining space, where the family enjoys informal meals and television viewing.

The refurbishment of Mimosa Moon seamlessly integrates contemporary conveniences with the enduring allure of a rural farmhouse. Megan’s selection of decor materials was pivotal to the project’s triumph. “When it comes to adorning your rooms, a curtain is a guaranteed success. We have utilised our curtains to do more than just provide privacy; we have used them to introduce colour, infuse a sense of warmth, and transform an ordinary room into a delightful one. The scale, colour, and texture all contribute to its success.”

Megan looked for beautiful practicality in window dressings. “The window coverings were selected to enhance the property’s views while adding depth and comfort.” Facing the winds, sun, and occasional flooding of Northern NSW, Megan explains that “we needed the real deal when it came to window dressings and what we were going to reveal versus what we wanted to conceal. The window coverings had to add something to the property without taking away any of the vistas.”

The blend of soft interior treatments with durable exterior ones provides a contemporary update to the home without the need for extensive structural changes. Megan chose this approach, believing the modern farmhouse was the perfect environment to balance softness and hardness. “It’s homey but warm, modern but still country,” she explained. The abundance of soft window treatments inside and the hard ones outside have given Mimosa Moon its contemporary charm without knocking down a wall or excavating a single thing.

A standout feature of the home is the 12-metre-long curtain wall in the living room. With so many windows and so much to see outside, the idea was to make a wall of softness. Megan has chosen the Luxaflex® Curtain in Arbre Fabric in a soft, semi-sheer neutral Froth colour. Backed with blackout fabric, it gives scope for various levels of light control and privacy to have the dream wall fully closed, partly opened or opened fully, and is a wonderful way to add dimension and depth to a very open and overly lit room.

“The same semi-sheer curtains without the blockout backing have been used for the dining room to complement the living room, which is important when you are dealing with an open plan,” says Megan. “Here we can diffuse the morning light without losing any of its splendour.”

As so much of the family’s lives are outdoors, Megan chose old-style classic Australian fixed awnings above the dining room windows (a simple pair of Luxaflex® System 2000 Awnings in white canvas) to protect the herb gardens on the back deck.

Continuing the use of awnings, Megan explains, “One of my favourite transformations has been the carport, in which we are leaning into our love of portmanteau and calling The PartyPort.” No longer just a carport, the space is a multi-functional outdoor room with incredible airflow, great views and a wonderful atmosphere. Powered by the Luxaflex® PowerView® Automation system with motorised blinds, it can instantly transform into a party room, outdoor bar, or entertaining area. Without altering the traditional farmhouse structure, the carport has been elevated to new heights with Luxaflex® Evo Awnings. “I wanted to use the straight drops in the open garage to create a conservatory room, an extension of our living spaces. These were fabricated in Dickson fabric in the colour Hardlot Green—a green and beige stripe reminiscent of old caravan annexes, giving the nostalgic feeling of family holidays.”

Mimosa Moon embodies a style that effortlessly combines the beauty of its natural surroundings with modern living. Through carefully selecting materials and thoughtful design choices, the property has become not just a home but a sanctuary where every corner tells a story of comfort and elegance. As Megan aptly puts it, “It’s homey, but warm, modern but still country,” a contemporary update achieved without the need to knock down walls or excavate, but rather by adorning spaces with the magic of softness and durability.

Many dream of living in harmony with nature while creating a space that nurtures relationships with family and friends. The design of a home plays a crucial role in achieving this balance. This is where Australis, a modern family home in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, stands out. Seamlessly blending contemporary living with the beauty of rural landscapes, Australis by Sealand Architects offers a unique and intimate connection to nature.

The vision for Australis was to create a home that not only caters to the needs of a young family but also adapts to the changing requirements as the children grow older. Sealand’s design is based on flexibility, a house that evolves alongside its inhabitants. The result is a harmonious blend of open central areas where the family can come together and smaller, intimate bedroom spaces at either end of the house for personal and quiet time.

One of Australis’s defining features is its seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. Large sliding glass doors and windows open onto the gardens and landscape, inviting the outdoors in. Natural light floods the rooms, creating a serene ambience that reflects the changing seasons. Sealand consciously utilised natural ventilation in the home’s design to ensure a constant connection with the natural environment, allowing the inhabitants to feel the day and the flow of air.

Australis pays homage to Queensland’s rich architectural heritage. Inspired by the elegant roof forms and timber construction of early Noosa buildings and the farmhouse typology traditionally found in the Noosa hinterland, Sealand sought to capture the essence of traditional Queensland architecture.

Externally, materials such as local hardwood, stone, and metal roof sheeting were used to create a beautiful, low-maintenance, and bushfire-resistant character. Internally, the house features a combination of local hardwood, stone, concrete, and plaster, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere.

By breaking up the house into a series of smaller pavilions, Australis seamlessly follows the site’s natural topography, harmoniously connecting to the landscape. This design approach not only adds visual interest but also creates a sense of intimacy and privacy within the home.

Living in a rural setting comes with its own set of challenges, and one of them is the risk of bushfires. Being surrounded by Australian native forests, the architects had to address this concern. To minimise the risk, they removed flammable eucalyptus trees from around the house and replaced them with native rainforest plants. These plants not only have a higher water content but also create a natural bushfire buffer around the house, ensuring the inhabitants’ safety and peace of mind.

Australis is not just a beautiful and functional home but also designed with sustainability in mind. Sealand has incorporated passive design principles to maximise energy efficiency and reduce the house’s environmental footprint. Using natural light and ventilation minimises the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning, resulting in lower energy consumption. Furthermore, the choice of materials, such as local hardwood and stone, ensures durability and reduces the need for frequent maintenance.

Australis is more than just a house; it is an experience. Sealand has meticulously crafted a space that embraces the beauty of rural living while offering the comfort and style desired by modern families. Every detail, from the choice of materials to the layout of the rooms, has been thoughtfully considered to create a home that exudes style, quality, and refinement.

A light and bright kitchen update for a classic Queenslander home by Style Kitchens by Design.

Working with a Designer for a Successful Kitchen Renovation

When it comes to kitchen renovations, collaborating with an interior designer or an expert kitchen design team can make all the difference. Here are some essential tasks to undertake before your first design appointment to ensure you get the perfect outcome for your dream kitchen renovation:

Establish a Budget

Before starting any kitchen renovation project, it’s crucial to establish a budget. Kitchen renovations can range from $15,000 to $100,000, so having a clear budget in mind will guide your designer in selecting products and finishes that align with your financial goals.

 Know Your Style

Deciding on the style of your dream kitchen is a fundamental step. Consider whether you prefer a traditional, country-style kitchen with warm timber and brass accents, a contemporary look with glass splashbacks and sleek countertops, a commercial-inspired design with stainless steel and concrete elements, or a luxurious space featuring cool stone benchtops and exquisite cabinetry. Create a folder of images that showcase your preferred layouts, colours, and appliances to help your interior designer or kitchen designer understand your style preferences.

Designing a Kitchen Renovation to Meet Your Lifestyle Requirements

Understanding your lifestyle requirements is crucial for designing a functional kitchen. Consider the following when planning a kitchen renovation:

• Do you frequently entertain guests, and is it formal or informal?

• Do you need in-kitchen dining or an island bench for socialising?

• Is access to an outdoor area important for serving food?

• Do you require dedicated space for wine storage?

• Consider the height and dominant hand of the primary cook to determine appropriate benchtop heights and appliance placement.

• Do you need a walk-in pantry for bulk storage?

• Is a separate preparation area necessary?

• Will the laundry be integrated into the kitchen?

• Are there any family members with special needs?

Providing detailed information about your kitchen design and lifestyle requirements will help your interior designer or kitchen design team create a kitchen renovation that’s tailored specifically to your needs and lifestyle.

Essential Kitchen Renovation Tips

When planning your dream kitchen renovation, there are several key design considerations to keep in mind. Let’s explore these essential kitchen renovation design elements:

Kitchen Layout and Functionality

The layout of your kitchen plays a significant role in its overall functionality. Consider the classic kitchen layouts, such as the U-shaped, L-shaped, or galley style. Each layout has its advantages, so choose one that suits your space and workflow preferences. Ensure that the key work areas, such as the sink, stove, and refrigerator, are conveniently located to create an efficient and ergonomic workspace.

Kitchen Storage Solutions

Ample storage is essential for a functional kitchen. Consider incorporating a mix of cabinets, drawers, and pantry space to accommodate your storage needs. Choose high-quality materials and hardware to ensure durability and ease of use. Utilise smart storage solutions, such as pull-out shelves, dividers, and vertical storage, to maximise the available space and keep your kitchen organised.

Kitchen Lighting

Proper lighting is crucial for both functionality and aesthetics in a kitchen. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a well-lit and inviting space. Install overhead lights, under-cabinet lighting, and pendant lights to illuminate different areas of the kitchen effectively. Consider incorporating natural light through windows or skylights to create a bright and airy atmosphere.

Kitchen Appliances

Selecting the right appliances is essential for a well-functioning kitchen. Choose energy-efficient models that suit your cooking preferences and lifestyle. Consider the size, features, and finishes that align with your design vision. Integrated appliances can provide a seamless and cohesive look, while freestanding options offer flexibility in placement and ease of replacement.

Kitchen Countertops and Surfaces

Countertops and surfaces play a significant role in the overall aesthetics and functionality of your kitchen. Choose materials that are durable, easy to clean, and complement your chosen style. Popular options include granite, quartz, marble, and solid surface materials. Consider the maintenance requirements and the level of durability needed based on your daily kitchen activities.

Kitchen Flooring Solutions

Selecting the right flooring is essential for both style and practicality. Choose materials that are durable, easy to clean, and can withstand the demands of a kitchen environment. Options such as ceramic tiles, hardwood, laminate, or vinyl flooring offer a range of styles and finishes to suit your design preferences.

Bespoke timber parquetry flooring, Polytec joinery, Lorde White natural marble benchtops and splashback, and modern cabinetry hardware from Lo & Co add the perfect finishing touch to this kitchen renovation by Earthborne by Design.

The Finishing Touches for a Perfect Kitchen Renovation

To truly make your dream kitchen come to life, pay attention to the finishing touches and personalisation when planning your kitchen renovation. Here are some ideas to consider:

Kitchen Colour Scheme and Materials

Choose a colour scheme for your kitchen renovation that complements your overall design vision. Consider the colour of your kitchen cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, and appliances. Opt for a cohesive and harmonious kitchen colour palette that creates a visually appealing and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate a mix of materials, such as wood, metal, glass, and stone, to add texture and visual interest.

Classic marble and sleek contemporary touches combine in this sensational kitchen renovation for a Queenslander home in Red Hill, designed by Darren James Interiors.

Kitchen Backsplash and Tiles

The backsplash is an opportunity to inject personality and style into your kitchen renovation. Consider using tiles, mosaics, or even a bold paint colour to create a focal point and protect your walls from stains and splashes. Choose materials and patterns that align with your chosen style and add visual interest to the space.

Kitchen Hardware and Fixtures

Selecting the right hardware and fixtures can elevate the overall look of your kitchen. Consider the style, finish, and functionality of handles, knobs, faucets, and sinks. Choose high-quality options that complement your design vision and provide ease of use.

A kitchen renovation is an exciting and rewarding project that can transform your home. By following these expert tips and essential considerations, you’ll be well on your way to creating the kitchen of your dreams. Remember to collaborate with professionals, establish a budget, understand your style preferences, and personalise the kitchen space to reflect your personality. Happy kitchen renovating!

Combining elegance with contemporary custom design, Earthborne by Design has transformed a dated Kangaroo Point apartment with a much-needed interior update and renovation.

Having previously collaborated with designer Paul Coulson from Earthborne by Design on two other investment properties, the new owners of this Kangaroo Point apartment knew exactly who to turn to when transforming their 27-year-old abode into a sophisticated haven, fit for modern city living.

With an open brief in hand for a contemporary style incorporating timber floors and natural stone elements, Earthborne by Design, with builder C&K Concepts, embarked on a full-scale renovation to bring their client’s vision to life

The first step was to open up the space by changing the layout, including moving the master bedroom door through the walk-in wardrobe to create a more balanced living area. This strategic alteration allowed for a seamless flow throughout the apartment.

“Undoubtedly, the fully integrated kitchen is the focal point of the revamped apartment,” says Paul. “We worked closely with Allfit Cabinet Solutions to create a sublime new cooking zone. The bespoke Polytec joinery, paired with Lorde White natural marble sourced from CDK Stone for the benchtops and splashback, infuses the kitchen with a touch of sophistication, while the modern cabinet hardware from Lo & Co adds the perfect finishing touch.”

To establish a timeless yet contemporary foundation for the apartment, Paul chose GrandOak Herringbone timber flooring. This classic French-style parquetry adds a touch of elegance to every room, seamlessly tying together the overall aesthetic.

In the living room, the custom Polytec joinery by Allfit Cabinet Solutions extends to the new entertainment unit, offering a cohesive look throughout the space. “To complement the interior’s understated elegance, we selected the Erskine Sofa from Cosh Living. Its clean lines and plush comfort perfectly complement the tranquil atmosphere,” Paul adds. “The Cumulus Pearl Gold Persian knot rug from The Rug Establishment, with its richness of gold, pearl, soft browns, and silver, also adds a touch of luxury to the open-plan living area.”

The master bedroom suite designed by Earthborne by Design continues the theme of classic yet contemporary elegance. The renovated ensuite bathroom, featuring custom cabinetry from the Australian-made ISSY by Zuster range, GROHE tapware, and Italian porcelain tiles, is a testament to the attention to detail in this renovation project — every aspect of the master bedroom suite exudes luxury and chic comfort.

“Renovating an apartment often comes with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to limited opportunities to move services and logistics,” Paul acknowledges of the hurdles faced during this transformational process. This included meeting building by-law requirements for acoustic ratings on the timber flooring. “However, with perseverance and expertise, we’ve successfully delivered a significant transformation that incorporates a harmonious blend of modern design elements and high-quality materials with timeless style.”
