The transformation of this classic Queenslander home in Brisbane combines architectural ingenuity with everlasting grace.

In the heart of Brisbane, where Queenslander homes reign supreme with their timeless charm and iconic features, stood a dwelling yearning for a modern twist. This is the story of its rebirth, guided by the visionary team from Bones Studio.

The challenge was clear: how to transcend the confines of traditional Queenslander design and forge a deeper connection between indoor comfort and the property’s lush outdoor expanse? The solution was nothing short of genius: elevate and reposition the dwelling, adding an additional level on the ground floor and sculpting a split-level design that danced with the natural contours of the land. Thus, the old facade gracefully embraced contemporary elegance, crowned by a breathtaking double-height space at the rear.

For the homeowners, the dream was profound: a home that embraced both intimate family moments and lively social gatherings. Bones Studio took up the challenge with fervour, meticulously partitioning the space to create distinct realms of comfort and serenity.

Bedrooms and utilities found solace at the front, while open-plan living areas beckon at the rear, where the backyard and pool now seamlessly intertwine with the living space.

Bones Studio embarked on a delicate dance of preservation and innovation, retaining the essence of the original dwelling while infusing it with contemporary marvels, like the slatted and perforated metal bridge that now serves as a symbol of unity on the upper level, gracefully linking the old and new.

Partnering with the skilled builders at Muller Constructions, Bones Studio breathed life into their vision, leaving no stone unturned. Interior designer Jessica White from Room by Room lent her expertise, infusing each space with an air of simple elegance and creativity.

The result is an extraordinary fusion of tradition and innovation—a home where indoor melds with outdoor, comfort intertwines with luxury, and the past dances with the present in a symphony of design.

This Hamilton home has been given a new lease on life in a fresh and elegant remodel by the interior design team at Highgate House.

Coming home is an absolute joy for the owners of this freshly renovated abode. The family of four now enjoys the comfortable elegance and effortless flow of their hilltop haven in Brisbane’s riverside suburb of Hamilton.

It was a personal recommendation that put them in touch with luxury interior design firm Highgate House. Director Leigh Boswell immediately saw the home’s beauty and potential. “With an abundance of natural light, generously proportioned spaces and a great connection to the outdoor areas we instantly knew we could achieve a light and airy feel” she notes.

Highgate House - main living area

With a keen understanding of the owners’ brief, Leigh and Interior Designer Ashlee Consoli were enlisted for a concept-to-completion update of two out of the three storeys, taking care of everything from renovation to soft furnishings and window treatments. The design would encompass the very best of the location and existing structure, finessing this to create a home that embraces its residents. “We strived to create a fresh, well-connected, elegant and functional home,” says Leigh. Job well and truly done, we say.

The first level is classic, inviting and serene, with hints of blue adding a subtle softness. Whether it’s deep indigo, as used in the high-backed chairs in the study, or delicate powder blues artfully dotted in each room. The use of blue is offset with white and natural timber, illuminated by swathes of natural light.

A combination of exclusively imported furniture and custom upholstery paired with Hand-painted lithographs above the living room sofa pair effortlessly with the soft furnishings (the peacock cushions being a personal favourite). While the gorgeous timber pieces add a touch of modern charm.

And, speaking of modern charm, the subtle colour palette of the powder room by Highgate House is a nod to the classical elements within the home and is offset by the use of a more contemporary floor tile. “We can’t go past the fabulous trailing floral wallpaper in the powder room, or its pretty blue ceiling!” says Leigh.

Downstairs, the home’s entry level would take on an entirely different aesthetic, again in line with what best suited the existing architecture. “This area was essentially a large space with a relatively low ceiling, lacking in personality” explains Leigh. The ideal place for a billiards and bar room, where a much darker colour palette takes centre stage imparting a masculine feel underpinned by a subtle sense of luxury. “Its transformation was quite outstanding,” she says. And we’re inclined to agree.

Parquetry flooring is a sophisticated foil for the deep-hued walls, while bespoke cabinetry is lit from within. The space has been meticulously planned to ensure entertaining is a dream for both larger get-togethers and more intimate gatherings. Cocktails, anyone?!

Inspired by mid-century modern style, this renovation of a mountain cabin in Buderim yields a forest hideaway fit for a family — with natural materials and artisan craftsmanship delivering a warmth of character inspired by nature.

Elevating the notion of a passion project, Damian Goode, Principal Architect at Hive Architecture, took on the challenge of a mid-century modern-inspired renovation for his own home in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to create a warm and timeless sanctuary for his growing family.

“Our practice at Hive Architecture is focused on delivering high-quality residential homes that have a soul, and some of our favourite projects include renovations to character homes that were modernised whilst retaining their original spirit,” says Damian. “We always gravitate towards using natural materials, and design our buildings to be sensitive to the environment and sustainable. So, when it came time for our studio to oversee the renovation of my own family home in Buderim, we took our cue from the surrounding forest.”

Goode Residence by Hive Architecture - Scott Burrows Photo - kitchen counters and sink

Seeing the potential to open up the interior, which was tired and a bit dark and gloomy, to connect with the beautiful forest beyond, Damian looked to large picture windows and doors to frame the treetop view. The serene vistas could then become the main artwork for the home.

“The rainforest, with its large eucalypts and lush green ferns, was the key source of inspiration for the tone of the project,” says Damian. “Living here has immensely increased our appreciation of nature, and we wanted the feel of the forest to permeate through the home through the use of beautiful timbers and natural stone.”

Goode Residence by Hive Architecture - Scott Burrows Photo - main living area

This vision dovetails perfectly into the warmly inviting and space-savvy kitchen. “It is designed to be tall and envelope the space, much like the surrounding trees,” explains Damian. “The main entry point is actually through the cabinetry, which creates a kind of portal to a special zone in the house. We do a lot of cooking and this really is the centre of our daily lives together as a family, so we wanted it to be a room that felt carved from within.” Essential to this was the use of Tasmanian blackwood solid and timber veneers, handpicked from the Matilda Veneer factory.

Goode Residence by Hive Architecture - Scott Burrows Photo - living and kitchen area

With such an emphasis on highlighting the beauty of timber throughout the home, finding a great cabinetmaker was key to the project. “We were introduced to Jarrod Watson from 99design by our builder, Colquhoun Enterprises, and met early on at his workshop to discuss the project and work through the details,” Damian says. “Jarrod wasn’t phased by the design detail we were proposing and welcomed the challenge.”

Goode Residence by Hive Architecture - Scott Burrows Photo - kitchen counters and cabinets overview

In fact, Damian says 99design brought a level of insight to the way things would be put together that was crucial to the success of the design. Bringing many years of industry expertise to the table, 99design was able to problem-solve with the Hive team in order to accommodate a variety of challenges in achieving the ultimate in design and function for the home. “There were details that I would not have considered that Jarrod picked up on, like the perfect matching of solid timber and veneer tones and running this the entire vertical length of the cabinetry, floor to ceiling,” says Damian. “This reinforced the natural look and design intent, and added to the detail, creating a dramatic outcome.”

For Jarrod, creating a space that would complement the verdant forest backdrop was always top of mind. “The custom-sized Tasmanian blackwood veneer was a big part of the project, and getting it right was essential,” he says. “Its presence adds a natural elegance that only real timber can provide, enhancing the overall aesthetic.”

Goode Residence by Hive Architecture - Scott Burrows Photo - kitchen cabinets overview

FORM Furniture Noosa was engaged to provide the bespoke timber handles required to finish the look, which were hand-crafted by their talented furniture makers. “These pieces enhance the timeless appeal of the cabinetry, ensuring a unique design,” says Jarrod.

While initially envisioning a grey stone to complete the kitchen, Damian stumbled upon Derwent honed marble at SNB Stone and instantly fell in love. This unexpected find led to a change in plans, with the green marble becoming a unique focal point. Paired with a textural custom rangehood, the swirling emerald sea gives a nod to the outside world while adding texture, impact and a touch of organic elegance. Land & People by Australian artist nardurna is a perfect fit: shining within the natural aesthetic and rich timbers tones.

The home’s bathrooms have been designed as soft and soothing retreats — continuing the colours and materials found elsewhere but with the added beauty of limestone floor tiles and the golden glow of ABI brushed brass tapware.

While the kitchen is undoubtedly the hero of this project, one of Damian’s favourite spots is by the picture window in the lounge that frames the landscape beyond. “It makes the house come alive, integrating the outside environment like a living work of art,” he says.

The synergy between architect and cabinetmaker has yielded a home that reflects Hive Architecture‘s vision and also the artisan craftsmanship of 99design. With the beauty of nature at its heart, what was once a gloomy cabin in the forest is now a mountain home with warmth and functional style, ready to grow with the family that resides within. And isn’t that every architect’s greatest success story?

This coastal home is a testament to the power of perseverance — and, of course, classic Sunshine Coast design.

A beachfront home: is there anything more quintessentially Sunshine Coast? And this home doesn’t just have the views captured on its second storey, it’s also only a moment’s walk to those sandy shores across the road. For the owners, the vision was a unique take on a coastal home, where ocean views would be part of everyday living, and the sea breezes could lazily meander through the space. It would also have to be a home that could evolve with their family — after all, who would want to leave a location this beautiful?

SX Construction - indoor-outdoor space and dining area

SX Construction - balcony

SX Constructions was tasked with building a home that would take advantage of all the joys of coastal living over many years to come. “We wanted to have the best of both form and function,” says Steve Essex, owner of SX Constructions.

There were two challenges from the outset. One, the timing: SX Constructions started the project in 2021, and across its lifespan they’d be impacted by material and labour shortages (thanks, COVID) and flooding on the Sunshine Coast. Delays stretched the project out. “It was a frustrating time to build, but we persevered!” says Steve. Two, the salt air. Any ocean lover can attest to salt giving an unwelcome patina to anything it can cling to, and the home would have to be designed with that in mind. “Ongoing exposure to salt obviously causes corrosion issues if building materials aren’t selected carefully enough,” says Steve. All materials would have to be low maintenance, durable, and perfectly suited to the home’s aesthetic — no easy task, but the SX Constructions team rose to the challenge for the home, which was designed by Zauss House and draws on concrete, aluminium, glass, masonry, render, and fibre-cement cladding.

SX Construction - exterior - facade

The design nods to those classic beachside properties we’re all familiar with, but it’s a luxurious take on more humble cousins. Take the polished concrete floors weaving their way through the home, their smooth speckle-like stones gleaming on the sand. In the master ensuite, rectangular tumbled natural limestone wall and floor tiles shine in oyster tones, paired with brushed brass accents; a concrete Arc basin, from Concrete Nation, ties the shades together. And, despite the abundance of concrete, aluminium and limestone, the home is nowhere near harsh. There’s a sense of softness throughout, captured through gently curving walls, arched mirrors and motifs, and oval basins and bathtubs. The finishes are inspired by nature — Caesarstone Riverlet casts a golden hue in the bathrooms — and ocean breezes whisper through the gossamer-fine window finishes throughout the home. There’s even a bright punch of green thanks to an indoor garden, one of the first things you see as you cross the threshold, with a variety of coastal favourites planted to capture the natural light dancing through the space.

The second storey, with its views out to the ocean, houses the main living area, kitchen and master bedroom, and is also home to Steve’s favourite feature: “the outdoor living area,” he says. “Not just because of the views, but its connectedness to the kitchen through oversized doors.” Outside, the home really had to withstand that salt, right down to the balustrade and pool fencing. “We chose custom-designed, powder-coated aluminium balustrade, curved to suit the radius of the balcony,” says Steve. “It’s a clean, minimalist finish.” Paired with a matching bar top integrated into the balustrade, the team has created the perfect space for, as Steve notes, “afternoon sundowners”.

Nestled in Brisbane’s charming suburb of Camp Hill, a luxurious and comfortable new family home named Costa stands as a testament to the seamless integration of modern elements with Mediterranean influences.

KJK Interiors + Slate Property exterior facade

Developed by Slate Property with interiors and exteriors by Karen Kunst, Studio Director of KJK Interiors, Costa exemplifies the best of Queensland living with a global twist, showcasing thoughtfully curated design and exquisite features.

Slate Property, renowned for its expertise in building aspirational homes in highly sought-after locations, acquired a site in Camp Hill that once held an outdated two-bedroom postwar property. With a vision to create a more generous and functional family home, Slate Property undertook the complete development, design, and build of Costa. The goal was to capture the broad appeal necessary for the real estate market together with a contemporary, quietly Mediterranean-inspired feel. Kristian Keleher, Property Director at Slate Property, explains, “We were inspired by the rendered white stucco walls and raw iron of traditional Mediterranean design but with a more intentional focus on modern indoor-outdoor Queensland living and a natural and timeless palette.”

KJK Interiors + Slate Property exterior - front elevation

With a north-facing backyard framing city views, the property boasts a generous 580 m2 block on a prized street. The design makes the most of this prime location and creates a harmonious connection between inside and out. “The interiors and exteriors were to feel bright and airy, with warm and neutral colours to reflect natural light and add a touch of luxury,” says Karen.

The home beautifully blends the charm of the surrounding environment with the comforts of modern living. As you step inside, past the front courtyard’s stunning three-metre-high olive tree, you are greeted by a light and inviting atmosphere. The palette of warm neutrals infuses the interior with a sense of tranquillity while a strategic use of timber and stone adds a natural touch. The overall aesthetic is calmly cohesive: refined luxury meets relaxed family living.

The kitchen is a perfect expression of the home’s soft minimalism, with each element chosen by KJK Interiors to complement the overall mood. Handmade Italian clay lights by Lighting Collective pull focus to the impressive 3.3-metre ceilings. Cabinetry in Polytec ‘Coastal Oak’ woodmatt, a sandy-toned oak timber with white-washed and soft-grey woodgrain undertones, pairs perfectly with the Chevron Oak timber floors from Awesome Timber Floors. This is underscored by Gareth Ashton’s modern yet organic Poco tapware in ‘Gunmetal’ from Abey Australia.

KJK Interiors + Slate Property - interior - kitchen island

The centrepiece of the kitchen, however, is the choice of Silver Vein Travertine, sourced from Project Stone Australia and crafted into benchtops and a bespoke wrapped rangehood feature. This dramatic touch of raw beauty elevates the cooking space to new heights. “Slate Property was keen to showcase such a beautiful product in the home, but physically getting the enormous three-metre-long slabs into position was a real challenge for our cabinetmakers and stonemasons,” says Kristian. “However, we were able to maximise the design of the stone layout to enable efficient installation and near-invisible bookmatched joins, with minimal waste.”

Practicality was a key consideration in the design of Costa. The home has been crafted to provide ample storage and spaces for entertaining. Each room has been meticulously designed and thoughtfully curated to create a harmonious balance between style and utility, ensuring every zone serves a purpose within an aesthetically pleasing environment.

As well as five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, the home features multiple living spaces including the main, media and upper-level retreat with wet bar. The master suite is a world of its own, with a private balcony and city views, a palatial walk-in robe, and a gorgeous ensuite with freestanding Ukiyo bath from ABI Interiors.

While on the lower level, an oversized butlers pantry/laundry/mudroom with dual entry is the ultimate in family-friendly functionality. Follow the sun and you’ll find the six-metre-wide stacking doors offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living, blurring the boundaries between the two so residents can fully embrace the Queensland climate. Whether it’s lounging by the pool or entertaining, this area promises to be a year-round favourite.

The subtle Mediterranean influences are evident in every detail of the design. From the olive tree and white render-look facade to the raw iron accents and sparkling pool, the home exudes charm and elegance, with spaces that evoke a sense of relaxation, reminiscent of lazy sun-drenched holidays spent on the European coast.

It’s a home that captures the essence of Aegean living while still being perfectly suited to the Queensland lifestyle. A luxurious retreat at ease in its prestigious suburban locale.

“With the talented team of Slate Property, trades, and suppliers, our concepts and designs were transformed into a truly amazing home that will remain timeless,” adds Karen from KJK Interiors of the finished residence. A testament to the power of thoughtful design and the pursuit of style that transcends trends and stands the test of time.

With a look lifted straight out of the most luxurious homes of the Caribbean and Bahamas, this Sunshine Coast beach house is a slice of tropical splendour.

Hampton homes - exterior - overview - drone shot

Take a short drive from Noosa to find this resort-like beachfront abode, boasting one of the most sought-after and impressive positions along the shores of Sunshine Beach. It’s the latest instalment in the property portfolio of renowned high-end building firm Hampton Homes Australia, who worked with long-time collaborator, David R Mann from David R Mann Interiors on the design and construction of the sprawling estate.

“My original inspiration and design direction was a strong influence of British West Indies and tropical, Caribbean plantation style,” explains David. “Think whitewashed rendered block work, wide verandah and covered patio areas with thick square columns, open-plan living areas with exposed beam-raked ceilings, and traditional white-framed windows with coloured timber shutters.” In keeping with this era, there’s also a twist of Georgian architectural style in the mix, making the project wonderfully evocative.

Hampton homes - exterior facade

The owners came to Hampton Homes Australia as a previous client, having recently purchased a record-breaking property along one of the most affluent areas of the Sunshine Coast. Wanting a tropical beachfront holiday home where their children, family members and close friends could escape to, they directed the team to create something as sensational as this locale. It would need to have enough bedrooms, all with ensuites, as possible plus multiple outdoor areas, covered and open to elements, to set the scene for an endless summer of fun, relaxation and entertaining.

Hampton homes - exterior - swimming pool area

Such began an extensive new design-and-build project led by David and Claus Sievers, manager and CEO of Hampton Homes Australia, working alongside Tom Kanchanasinith of TK Concepts for the ArchiCAD and CAD.

The property came with an existing house, which was effectively demolished apart from a few retaining walls, but the swaying coconut palms stayed: setting the tone for what the new home would become.

“Claus and myself took our cues from the vista when submitting our design concepts,” says David. “Looking out to the ocean through those palm trees, we felt like one could have been on any exotic South Pacific or Hawaiian island. Inspired by that kind of island idyll, we took a relaxed, casual approach to the exterior and interior design and came up with a modern take on classic plantation style well suited for Queensland’s climate and laid-back beach lifestyle.”

The epitome of this barefoot splendour is showcased in the alfresco spaces, including a spectacular infinity-edge pool and spa and a series terraces and outdoor lounging zones to convey an exotic resort feel on a grand scale.

Hampton homes - exterior - swimming pool with views of the beach

The pool is a glittering jewel inspired by the shoreline beyond, edged by plenty of shaded loungers to soak up those ocean views. Plus, there’s a covered pool pavilion with an outdoor kitchen, dining, and comfy lounge zone complete with a fireplace where guests can gather after halcyon days at the beach.

Hampton homes - exterior - swimming pool with poolside seats

A sweeping terrace and semi-circular tiled balcony looking directly east onto Sunshine Beach sets the scene for many a long and languid lunch. But step inside (if you can pull yourself away from those sun loungers), and it’s a cool and calm respite of comfort. Wide-plank, solid oak flooring from Wildwood Aged Timber Flooring runs throughout the living spaces, with a luxe but light touch of classic-coastal style brought in through the mix of natural marble tiles and slabs, solid teak furniture, natural linens and feature fabrics from Anchor and Belle Design, and custom cabinetry by G&M Craftsman Cabinets.

Hampton homes - exterior - multipurpose function area with views of the beach

The kitchen, dining, formal lounge and main lounge are all on the first level and are predominantly open plan under one large, exposed beam-peaked roof, which runs the entire house width. “The only incursion on this space is a partial room divider that does double duty as a bookshelf,” says David. “It’s an expansive area of the home and feels calming, open, and light-filled, the latter being due to the extent of windows installed the entire east face.”

Hampton homes - interior - dining and living area

The second floor is dedicated entirely to the master bedroom suite, with an exposed peaked ceiling, spacious balcony, a luxurious ensuite bathroom and walk-in robe, and a private home office that enjoys views out to the northeast.

Hampton homes - interior - bedroom

Head down the delightful curved staircase to find five ground-level bedrooms, which all have a view of the ocean and access to the shaded verandah zones outside, each with an ensuite bathroom, queen-sized bed, and robe storage. Complete with a bespoke curved bar made by RAW Sunshine Coast for the shared entertainment zone, fit for social gatherings, this invitation-only retreat is perfect for family and friends: just as the owners had envisioned.

Hampton homes - interior - stairs and receiving area

“We sourced many bespoke features that add to the grandeur and beauty of the home’s design, but without a doubt, my favourite special items are the clusters of stacked and tiered lantern-style pendants hanging from the centre of the main living space,” says David.

“There is also another set in the peaked roof over the stairwell to the master suite and over the kitchen island. Made from finely spun stainless steel and perforated with tiny holes, the surface is powder-coated in ivory; however, each perforation reveals the shiny steel inside, making them glitter and glint when illuminated, almost like treasures from the ocean.”

Hampton homes - interior stairs

These incredible works were created by the Spanish design studio a-emotional light, who adapted their lanterns to suit David’s brief, and supplied by Pete Seabrook and his Project 20 Australia team, along with all the custom and unique lights used throughout the home. “Myself and Hamptons Homes Australia have worked with Pete extensively on past projects,” says David. “These are rare and unique pieces and encapsulate that special magic we were after when designing this beautiful home together.”

This home transcends the usual cliche of a ‘beach house’ — it’s elegant, refined, and utterly luxurious in scale and style. “I can’t recall in my 30-year career having spent so much time on the design process for any other project,” says David. “And I’d say few projects will ever come close to what has been spent to achieve this stunning dream beach home.”

“It was important for the staging to reflect the calibre of the building and have the high-end purchaser in mind,” notes Carly Morgan, interior designer at The Drawing Mill. “The brief involved luxurious finishes, sculptural forms, and connection to the coastal landscape. DOMO curated a collection of pieces across the entire home, pulling from various exclusive collections to complement each space.”

Ready inspiration came from the beach vistas and the existing architecture and interior design by Bureau Proberts — an exquisite backdrop of textural limestone, washed-back timbers, and fluid lines. The DOMO team set about complementing this elegantly organic scene, drawing on iconic names including Swiss brand de Sede and French favourite Ligne Roset for the bedrooms, living and dining areas, study, media room, and expansive terrace.

The project channels a boutique beach hotel: this luxe iteration balancing extreme comfort with sophisticated design-led style. Sumptuous textures bring cosiness to the generously proportioned rooms while the palette of warm neutrals and flashes of black, nickel, green and brass delivers a cohesive feel. No harsh edges here, just plenty of places to curl up and enjoy the view.

In the dining room, de Sede chairs in whisky leather bring an airy charm to the table with their cantilevered design, while an iconic sofa blooms like soft coral in the living zone. “The de Sede DS-600 sofa, exclusive to DOMO, is a strong presence,” says Carly. “Distinctive segments are curved to create two sides of seating, and the considered layout encourages interaction between zones, adding volume to the interior.”

Lotus planters from KUN Design draw you outside to bask in sunshine and ocean breezes — mix a martini at the sleek bar zone, and you’re there.

Throughout the apartment, slices of sunlight add another dimension, illuminating diaphanous window dressings and framing the first bedroom’s Ligne Roset Ruche Bed adorned in Harald Jade Velvet. In the second bedroom, art selections also come to the fore with a bold Natasha Wright piece, Smokey Eyes. Carly looked to Australian galleries including M Contemporary, Anita Traverso Gallery and Sabu Studio for their selections, adding depth to every room.

DOMO - Beach House - interior - master bedroom

As you might expect, the main bedroom suite is a private haven complete with a tranquil ensuite. The Ligne Roset Desdémone bed in velvety Harald 3 ‘Noisette’ fabric was chosen for its cocooning embrace while HC28 Cosmo’s Layer side table brings through luxe accents of marble and brass.

No detail has been overlooked here, right through to the covetable selection of floor lamps throughout the apartment: all art pieces in their own right. And the teams worked down to the wire to ensure their launch event was as exceptional as those ocean views. “There are always spatial constraints when creating furniture and styling packages for apartments, particularly with lift access and delivery challenges,” admits Carly. “We worked closely with DOMO and our delivery partners to ensure the project was ready in time — complete with a little nail-bite moment when a swapped-out rug arrived on the day.”

DOMO - Beach House - interior - indoor-outdoor space

The project was always intended to find this Broadbeach beauty her family. And it clearly struck a chord: the penthouse was snapped up for a cool $6 million! “We wanted to elevate the already stunning space and give agents and clients the complete experience of living in this exclusive address,” says Carly. “The DOMO package resonated so much with the new owners that they went on to purchase many of the items.”

Our only question: why wouldn’t you?

A sophisticated, ambitious, and deliciously decadent update to this modern family home in Brisbane has delivered the perfect playground for a family of keen entertainers.

Studio James Interiors - dining and kitchen

For a young family who loves to cook and entertain, any home renovation was destined to have a dash of restaurant luxe. In this case, it’s a big serve of boutique hotel style thanks to a wall-to-wall update by Studio James Interiors.

Set on a hectare overlooking Brisbane bushland, the home’s scale is generous, to say the least. The 600 sqm+ internal floor plan comprises six bedrooms and five bathrooms (including the Pool House) plus plenty of spacious living, dining and lounging spaces and entertaining zones. Its grand proportions were crying out for the interiors to match.

Cue David James, director of boutique Brisbane-based interior design studio Studio James Interiors, who was handed the brief for a ‘visually impressive and luxurious home’ with a relatively free rein. “Initially, I was engaged for furnishings/decorations, but as the scale of the project increased, so did my scope,” says the designer, who collaborated with Milan Acimovic, director of luxury home builder Construct Right, on the project. “The home was presented as a blank canvas, leading to our overall concept of modern, Australian resort living presented in a masculine and luxurious way.”

Cinematic moments start at the threshold, where an epic staircase unfurls like a ribbon of tempered chocolate — perfectly expressing the home’s heady blend of form and function.

Studio James Interiors - living room area with view of the spiral staircase

“The size of the home demanded a statement entry,” says David. “We selected a two-way fireplace, adding drama and visually segmenting the lobby from the front living space. The staircase to the bedrooms was envisioned as a sculptural element to welcome guests.” A statement stone wall accentuates the ceiling height and balances the family’s enormous television (even keen entertainers cherish a cosy night in).

Studio James Interiors - stairs with view of the living or lounging area with a fireplace

On the functional side, the home needed to meet the rigours of daily life and double as a party pad. “The main practical brief was to integrate the living spaces with the bushland views and to create a vast entertainers’ paradise,” says David.

“The owners had already chosen the appliances before the kitchen design was completed!” The high-performance hub was repositioned to the back of the property to maximise those views. It’s another wow moment, with 2pac cabinetry colour-matched to the Miele appliances, contrasting dark timber joinery, and a 3.7-metre island bench clad in durable and beautiful Blanc Borghini porcelain slabs. Dreamscape Landscape from Melbourne-based artist Claire Kirkup softens the scene with a joyful bolt of colour.

Tucked away behind custom joinery, a full caterer’s kitchen seems to complete the picture. But then you spot the teppanyaki bar: with Gaggenau grills, a bronze range, and a full wet bar in glorious green Maximum Verde Alpi porcelain from Artedomus. Bon appetit!

Convivial gatherings now converge around the island or bar, spill out to the refurbished swimming pool, or flow into the neighbouring dining room where custom pendants from lumen8 hover over a 12-seat walnut dining table by Christopher Blank. There’s also a cosy sitting room overlooking the pool. All in all, the seating count totals 35 in this spectacular open-plan space (akin to a small restaurant). Need a nightcap? Head to the whisky room.

Studio James Interiors - seating area

Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms take cues from luxury hotel design with soft integrated light, plush carpeting, premium linens, and underfloor heating. The master suite and guest bedroom were reconfigured for better flow, with the “overly large” family bathroom split to deliver a proper guest suite.

For David and his team, the home’s scale and natural setting underscore the design. “The most challenging part was the property’s sheer size and creating a consistent thread to connect the spaces while giving character to individual zones,” he says. In response, bronze accents, consistent cabinetry, and porcelain-look stone establish visual continuity with bespoke lighting, feature tiles, and tactile soft furnishings delivering unique moods. “From the bushland backdrop emerged a sophisticated palette that weaves shades of lush greens, warm sennas, and rich browns,” David adds. “This colour scheme is the cornerstone, grounding the design in harmony with its surroundings and creating an abode where nature’s beauty and modern luxury meet.”

David’s preference for Australian-made design and small-batch manufacturing shines in every room, with art selections from Studio Gallery Brisbane creating a perfectly curated whole. “The detail and care shown by smaller businesses align with my own design process,” he notes. When it comes to the designer’s ‘favourites’, he leans towards the luxury inclusions that make this home so special. “I love the steam shower,” he admits. “A teppanyaki bar is also a stand-out feature for a residential space.”

We hear both are already in high rotation.

Character charm meets elegant modern living in this worker’s cottage renovation, creatively designed for a young family of five.

The charm and potential of this 1890s worker’s cottage in East Brisbane, once home to the local cobbler, swiftly enamoured the current owners — and their architects. “We were immediately attracted to the building,” says architect Stewart Smith of SMITH Architects. “It was humble and full of the typical late 1800s and early 1900s timber construction details: horizontal joints, regency internal lining, double-hung windows and a bullnose roof.”

Smith Architects-Withington-Street- indoor-outdoor space with swimming pool

While SMITH Architects was tasked with this recent reimagining, including the interior design, their connection with Cobblers Cottage goes back a decade. “We got to know the owners, Scott and Kym, having completed a small reno here in 2012 that allowed space for their family of three to grow into a tribe of five,” Stewart explains. “As the boys grew, it was clear more living and bedroom spaces were required. Our clients needed a robust family home — but they also have a strong appreciation of beautiful spaces.”

As with many Brisbane houses of the pre-1946 era, council guidelines played a role in the final design. No sweat for this boutique design firm, experienced in both highly individual new builds and translating the spirit of character homes like this into the now. “We decided to raise the cottage, allowing the ground-floor spaces to cascade down the gently sloping site,” says Stewart who worked with structural engineers Westera Partners and builders PJL Projects to achieve the desired flow. “Each change in level defines the edge of the next living space … this also avoided large cuts or excavation works during construction.”

This clever response to the 405 sqm lot delivers strong yet informal connections between key spaces. The kitchen looks out to the pool, the living room speaks to the front yard through large shutters, and the dining room connects vertically to the vaulted rumpus. “This allows the family to be in different parts of the house yet maintain some form of visual or audible connection,” says Stewart.

While the extension is “small but comfortable” to maintain play space and gardens outside, the home isn’t short on impact. “The volume within provides a sense of luxury,” notes Stewart of the two-storey void that draws your eye to the mezzanine, home to an open rumpus/study that riffs off the four bedrooms. Floating above the kitchen and dining room, its design plays into the airy yet textural aesthetic.

A wash of Dulux ‘Whisper White’ unites the home with a light touch while durable yet beautiful materials create cohesion. “The materials palette is simple, elegant and consistent: blackbutt timber, burnished concrete, marble and brass,” says Stewart. “The concrete floor, steps and seats also help connect and define the spaces.” In the kitchen, treasured cookbooks and trailing greenery find a home within suspended shelving from Maytain Cabinets, with classic white Polytec joinery, timber accents and sleek stone completing the picture.

Smith Architects-Withington-Street-interior-dining-and-kitchen

It’s a take on minimalism that feels fresh and sophisticated. And even in a space-savvy layout, SMITH Architects made room for indulgences: high-spec kitchen appliances, Calacatta Crema stone benchtops, Italian-made Inti pendants from lumen8, and a Mark Tuckey timber dining table to name a few.

Then there’s Queensland’s favourite addition: a backyard pool. Built by PJL Projects and flanked by lush landscaping by Ecru Landscape Architects and Innovascape, its turquoise depths look oh-so inviting. The back of the home received special attention because, as every Brisbanite knows, rebuffing the sun in a west-facing yard is serious business. An original owner had installed a vertical timber screen for the job, inspiring the modern solution that now provides shelter and invites ventilation. The slotted profile is another nod to the original timber construction and echoed in the custom Zincalume roof. Heat has also been offset inside with high-set windows, R2.5 insulation, and large-format shutters to temper light and privacy.

Smith Architects-Withington-Street-exterior-backyard with swimming pool

The shared vision of owners and architect, Cobbler’s Cottage breathes new life. “Combining compact planning with height and volume internally has made it feel open, welcoming,” says Stewart. “It helped make a modestly sized home feel a little opulent.” Beyond the white picket fence, the façade is more charming than ever, with a pop of Dulux ‘Bayleaf’ pulling focus to the upper level where original timber detailing has been preserved. And with the fit now as comfortable as a favourite shoe, the family has embraced their new/old home with the delight and love it so clearly deserves.

In the world of interiors, the fusion of modern aesthetics with artisan craftsmanship creates truly captivating living spaces. These gorgeous residential transformations are each uniquely stylish, and utterly alluring.

Brisbane-based studio Design & Co has mastered the art of collaboration, working closely with local artisan cabinetmakers Facoory Cabinetry to transform ordinary residences into stunning showcases of bespoke design. Spaces that demonstrate a seamless integration of functionality and style.

The Rivergum House project presented Design & Co with the opportunity to create a light, minimalistic ambience for a family home. The challenge was to refine the internal layout and enhance the flow between adjoining rooms. Grainne Devlin, Creative Director at Design & Co, worked alongside Senior Interior Designer Jocelyn Baxter to develop a fresh new design for the kitchen, dining, and bar zones.

The kitchen design focused on catering to the clients’ love of entertaining and the desire for a space where the entire family could gather during holiday seasons. “The new kitchen had to be a bright and airy family space,” says Grainne. But there was a non-negotiable inherent in the brief.

“We couldn’t move the existing plumbing to the original island, so we had to find a solution that created a new island in that same space,” the designer explains. “The end result is a glorious large square island bench, which we worked closely with Facoory Cabinetry to perfect.” Wrapped in timber and stone, it’s the showpiece of the new kitchen, creating easy movement and an informal family meeting point.

Design & Co - kitchen - island and breakfast area

As with many projects, it’s those finer details that make a difference day to day. In this case, it’s the sleek custom-routed handles to the pantry door and the utilisation of the Blum Servo Drive in the bin drawer, eliminating the need for handles or shadow lines and ensuring effortless functionality. The little things, right?

Thanks to the reconfigured spaces, your focus now flows naturally from the kitchen to the dining zone where upholstered bench seating, designed by Design & Co and crafted by Facoory Cabinetry, creates a highly social hub for family and guests to enjoy.

“I just love the whole kitchen and dining space,” says Gem Walker, co-owner of Facoory Cabinetry alongside her husband, Shane.“It is such a lovely space to sit and dine or just mingle, with its long bench seating beckoning you to settle in and relax.” Gem also notes the neighbouring cocktail bar as a standout. “Design & Co has created such a gorgeous moody area for the bar: my favourite space in the project,” she says. The aesthetic is certainly beguiling, with a bronze splashback mirror, striking dark brushed brass hardware from Momo Handles, and a Kate Spade light. The cherry on top? A playful Mallow lounge chair from Great Dane Furniture (itself a collab between Danish brand Labofa and Stockholm’s Note Design Studio). Inspired by a plush pile of marshmallows, it invites you to linger longer.

Design & Co - mini bar area
Design & Co - interior - mini bar area

The space holds hidden practicality too: an integrated Point Pod that rises from the bar benchtop as required, perhaps to drive a blender (margaritas anyone?) or charge a phone.

Design & Co - interior - furniture

The bar area seamlessly connects to a large home theatre for footy afternoons and movie nights, with direct access to a spacious entertainer’s deck. All in all, it’s a perfectly curated and generous setting for both family relaxation and parties.

For another example of this symbiotic relationship, we travel to inner-city Brisbane and the Coronation Residences. The project here involved a guest bathroom redesign and renovation in an urban pied-à-terre apartment. Design & Co once again collaborated with Facoory Cabinetry to fulfil the clients’ desire for a WOW bathroom with lots of storage.

Design & Co - interior - bathroom - vanity
Design & Co - interior - bathroom - lavatory

Despite the constraints of the apartment’s layout, including an absence of natural light, Design & Co managed to create a sense of spaciousness through the use of large format 1200 x 600 porcelain tiles. The bathroom now exudes elegance and functionality, with carefully crafted storage solutions provided by Facoory Cabinetry and a custom marble light sourced by Grainne from America.

Design & Co - interior - shower
Design & Co - interior - bathroom - jack and jill vanity area

Since its establishment in 2015, Design & Co has been dedicated to facilitating seamless collaborations between cabinet makers, builders, and their clients. The studio has grown into a thriving hub for designs that transcend residential and boutique commercial spaces. What sets them apart? Their close partnerships with experienced cabinet makers like Facoory Cabinetry, a family business established in 1970 with the third generation coming through, who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to each project.

“They share our values: going above and beyond for clients and their requirements,” says Grainne. “As these two gorgeous homes show, it’s collaborations like these that enable us to customise beautiful, bespoke living spaces that are well designed and genuinely unique, with a touch of the unexpected.”

By bringing together design finesse, specialist know-how, and meticulous attention to detail from both sides, perfect projects are born. These beautiful, liveable spaces demonstrate the remarkable synergy between contemporary design and artisan craftsmanship.

Step inside Sonnenhaus, a contemporary family home blending iconic decor pieces with the tactile beauty of concrete, face brickwork, travertine, timber, and natural stone.

Designed to be a contemporary yet welcoming and intimate sanctuary for its residents, Sonnenhaus is ingeniously built on an unusually shaped site, utilising every inch of space to create a dynamic, light-filled home that merges comfort and class.

John Contoleon from John Contoleon Architecture, the mastermind behind the design, shares his insights, “Taking advantage of the northern aspect, capturing light and breezes, the plan hugs the boundary to surround a central courtyard, the gathering space for family and friends and the heart of the home. Large openings and continuation of materials beyond the internal boundaries blur the lines between inside and outside, creating one large outdoor living room.”

While Sonnenhaus embraces openness and connection with nature, it also offers privacy and separation when needed.  Through the strategic use of screens and concrete walls, the interior spaces remain shielded from prying eyes while still offering beautiful views of the surrounding area.

Brought to life by Kasso Constructions, the design takes into account the narrow street frontage, harmoniously integrating with the surroundings and sympathetic to the neighbourhood’s mix of post-war and newly built homes.

LIVING EDGE AUSTRALIA - interior - stairs

A considered palette of materials underpins the allure. “Formed concrete, face brickwork, travertine, timber and natural stone were chosen for their durability, tactile qualities, and rawness,” says John. “With the ability to last generations and age gracefully, these low-maintenance materials fit the family’s long-term aspirations for Sonnenhaus.”

LIVING EDGE AUSTRALIA - interior - living room with view of the kitchen

John Contoleon Architecture also incorporated sustainable principles to minimise energy consumption and ensure a comfortable living environment throughout the year. Given its location in the subtropics, the home’s single-room-thick plan and large openings allow living spaces to catch the breeze, reducing the need for mechanical cooling.

Deep concrete overhangs provide direct solar access during winter and shade during summer, further optimising energy efficiency. The clever use of timber screening not only ensures privacy but also acts as a double facade, along with the stone-ballasted roof and gardens, to reduce heat load while providing softness and interest.

When it came to selecting furniture and styling the interiors, the residents of Sonnenhaus turned to Studio James Interiors for their expertise. Collaborating with renowned furniture supplier Living Edge, Studio James Interiors curated an indoor/outdoor design to enhance the home’s unique textural elements.

Interior designer David James shares their plan, saying, “For us, it was about choosing pieces that would respond to and complement the stunning modern architecture of John Contoleon. An earthy mid-century approach was taken to the selection of furnishings from Living Edge, which responded to the textural elements and curved concrete features throughout the home. Iconic mid-century pieces such as the Noguchi coffee table and Eames Lounge have been mixed with more contemporary pieces such as the Extremis Hopper table outside for a timeless feel.”

With three energetic children, practical considerations also played a crucial role in the interior design. The family stressed they wanted the furniture to be comfortable and approachable so guests felt at home. The selection of materials focused on durability and ease of maintenance, with wipeable materials such as timber, leather, and metal.

“Everything passed the sit test with flying colours!” says David, who singles out the EOSS x Herman Miller Crosshatch lounge chairs (uniquely crafted with parachute cords!). “They are a favourite of mine as they sit perfectly in a space that blends interior and exterior architecture.”

The home’s public spaces were all relatively neutral; however, in the more private areas on the first level, the clients requested more colour to be used. For the primary suite, for example, a specific brief was given for a feeling of a beach holiday in the suburbs.

“We achieved this with a beautiful feature wall, a custom print from Australian artist Georgie Wilson, oak furniture, and beautifully casual linens. Wall-to-wall linen sheer curtaining was also selected to soften the space,” says David.

The design also took into account the family’s desire for bedrooms to be adaptable. Each child was given the opportunity to choose their own paint colours, creating a sense of ownership and personalisation in their individual spaces.

David explains, “The children’s briefs started with pink, purple, and lime green; I then built a scheme around the core colour to reflect each child’s personality. Despite the bold colour, the critical furniture items were all neutral, allowing the spaces to grow with the child.”

In the vast open-plan lounge, dining, and kitchen area, the selections from Living Edge take centre stage. Iconic pieces including Walter Knoll’s Prime Time sofa and Tadeo dining table anchor the interior and create a visual harmony between architecture and decor. This thoughtful curation enhances the overall aesthetic appeal, ensuring that Sonnenhaus remains a stylish and inviting home for years to come. Setting a benchmark for high-end design and innovative functionality, it’s a masterful blend of design and comfort — an exceptional residence that is not only visually stunning but also perfectly suited for modern family life.
